Fire Company History
Leitersburg, situated 6 miles north of Hagerstown, MD 6 miles east of Smithsburg MD and 5 Miles south of Waynesboro PA is a small, rural community with a population of approximately 2500 people. Leitersburg was founded in 1815 by Jonathan Leiter, who owned the majority of the property in the area.
Until the 1950's the closest fire protection to the area was the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company. Leitersburg never developed into a booming town due to the vast amount of rural farmland surrounding the community. Water and sewer has never been considered feasible to the town due to the small population and minor growth.
In the early 50's, the people of the community concluded that with no water hydrants available and the nearest fire station, Smithsburg being 6 miles away, a town fire department should be formed.
A meeting was called by the Leitersburg Ruritan Club, which sent out letters to all the residents of District 9 urging their attendance. During this meeting the then know Leitersburg Ruritan Fire Company was formed. It was decided the company will meet in the Leitersburg School the third Monday of each month. Prior arrangements had been made for the purchased of a used fire truck from the Blue Ridge Summit Fire Co. which would be temporarily housed in a rented garage on what is now known as Leiter St.
As was true in the past, concerned citizens still provide the vital fire protection required in the Leitersburg community today. The members of the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Company are probably one of your neighbors. Like you, we have families and careers, kids who play sports
